Statement on humpback stranding
New Jersey Offshore Wind Alliance Statement

“There is no evidence that recent whale stranding incidents have anything to do with offshore wind activity off the East Coast. The offshore wind industry adheres to rigorous safety protocols during all offshore activities, including surveying, to minimize environmental impact and ensure the protection of marine mammals, including whales. This includes strict compliance with vessel speed restrictions and the presence of protected species observers onboard all survey vessels to monitor for marine life and oversee protective measures. A recent Brown University Study points out the networks of misinformation on marine mammals that divert the conversation away from facts and the truth. Extensive studies conducted by the federal government and research institutions have consistently shown that offshore wind development is not linked to whale deaths, and that climate change, vessel strikes, and fishing gear entanglement are proven threats to wildlife. Offshore wind projects undergo thorough environmental assessments and implement mitigation measures to safeguard ocean wildlife, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable energy practices while preserving our marine ecosystems. For factual and science-based research and information we point you to both the BOEM and NOAA websites. The offshore wind industry remains committed to our shared concerns around ensuring the safety and security of marine mammals.
The recent death of the humpback whale in Long Beach Township is incredibly sad and unfortunate. We commend the Marine Mammal Stranding Center and their tireless work in taking care of and examining stranded animals. We direct those interested in their work to their website, mmsc.org, where they provide updates on necropsy results. Further information on the ongoing Unusual Mortality Event for humpbacks can be found here.”
